As a user of the GMES/RSI network, you have the ability to make webpages and other files available on the departmental web server. This document explains how to get started.
Preliminaries
First, login to a Sun workstation. (If you're using a Windows PC, you can follow the SSH instructions to connect to the login server.)
Once you're logged in, click the Terminal icon (the one with the "X") on the Front Panel and type webfix. This will create a directory named public_html in your home directory and will set any necessary file permissions. Now you're ready to start working with files in that directory.
Personal Web Space
Any files you put in your public_html directory will appear on the GMES/RSI web server in your personal web space. The URL includes your user name, and will look something like this:
http://www.geo.mtu.edu/~jqpublic/
or
http://www.rsi.mtu.edu/~jqpublic/
Using Mozilla Composer
Unless you're familiar with another method of editing HTML files, we recommend that you start with Mozilla Composer. First, start Mozilla. On a Sun Workstation, do this by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting Internet Tools | Composer. On a Windows PC, start Mozilla by selecting Start | All Programs | Mozilla | Mozilla. On MacOS, look in your Applications folder.
Once Mozilla is started, select Window | Composer. Click Open, and browse to the public_html directory within your home directory. (On a Windows PC, your home directory is the H: drive.) Open index.html, and edit it as you like. Once you're done making changes, click Save. If you link to other files or images, make sure these are also in your public_html directory.
