1. Install
Download putty.exe and save it to a convenient location, such as C:\Windows or C:\WINNT. You may want to add a Desktop shortcut for PuTTY. You can do this by right-clicking on the Desktop and selecting New | Shortcut and then browsing to the location you saved putty.exe.
2. Configure
When you double-click on putty.exe or the shortcut you created, you'll see the PuTTY Configuration screen (Figure 1). Enter the host name (such as login.geo.mtu.edu or login.rsi.mtu.edu) in the Host Name field and select SSH from the Protocol options as shown. You can save this configuration by typing a name in the Saved Sessions field and selecting Save. Otherwise, just select Open to connect.

The first time you connect to a server with PuTTY, you will see a Security Alert dialog (Figure 2). This is normal behavior. Selecting Yes will cause PuTTY to check the server's host key against PuTTY's saved host key for added security.
3. Connect
You should now see the PuTTY main terminal window. Enter your username at the login as: prompt, and your password at the next prompt. That's it!
